Hamsters are rodents with teeth that grow throughout their 2 to 4 years life. The four common types of hamsters are Cambells, Roborovskis, Winter Whites and Syrians. The first three types are called dwarf hamsters due to their small size. Sylians are called golden hamsters.


What are hamsters like ?

Hamster sleep in the day and are active at night. They can carry a lot of food in their check pouches to eat later. Hamsters do not like being touched and its bite are deep and painful.

However, if you have played with it since it was young, it is unlikely to bite you. Hamster can get injured if they fall or are squeezed too tightly.

Which type of hamster should I get ?

Hamsters comes in many different colour. the Roborovski however only has one fur colour - sandy brown. Small hamsters move very fast and are more fun to look at than to play with.




How many should I get ?

Different types of hamsters usually do not get along. Syrian hamster like to be alone and may fight with other hamster if put together. Dwarf hamsters get along with others of the same type. When keeping two hamsters together, it is important to give them plenty of hiding places and check for wounds occasionally.

What do hamsters eat ?

Hamsters are omnivores, hence eat both plants and meat. A mixture of seeds, dried fruits and vegetables is ideal for hamsters. Hamsters love sunflower seeds but too many will make them ill.

What my hamster need ?

  • A cage
  • Food & water
  • A wheel ( one without holes would be best )
  • Bedding ( wood shavings)
  • A little hamster house to hide in
  • A food dish
  • Love & time

How do I hold my hamster?

 Pick hamsters up by cupping them gently and slowly, so as not to scare them. Always hold it over the cage so that if it jumps suddenly it would not be hurt.

How do I look after my hamster ?

The cage bedding need to be changed at least once a week. The cage can be washed with water and vinegar to remove stains. Hamsters need not be bath as they can clean themselves.

Should I breed my hamsters ?

No! Hamsters can have up to 20 babies and will be difficult to find good new homes for all of the babies. Hamster mothers may eat their young if the babies are sickly or if she is disturbed. It is important not to touch the babies as this will change the scent on them.
